Fall is synonymous with chunky knits, oversized outerwear, football, and pumpkin spice everything — and we're here for it. Which is why we consulted experts of the industry to help us with our new fall wardrobe checklist. Ahead you'll find trend tips from our favorite bloggers, models, stylists, and influencers
to help us navigate all the leather tunics, metallic dad sneakers, menswear-inspired coats, bright tights, and midi skirts that this season has to offer.
Leather Tunics: "I've always loved fall and winter fashion [and] to be able to wear boots, coats, and suede, but when I moved to Miami six years ago it was a challenge to wear my favorite wardrobe due to the tropical weather year-round," says Lourdes Fernández-Velasco, creative director of Miami Fashion Week. "Now I take advantage of the weather when I travel to New York City (and my native Spain), to strut in animal prints, silver, pleats, and capes. Right now I'm currently obsessed with leather dresses, particularly this Maje Leather Tunic Dress ($615).”
The Dad Sneaker: "The spring/summer it shoe was the chunky trainer or dad sneaker and this trend is definitely continuing into the fall season," says Erica Russo, Bloomingdale’s vice president, and fashion director for accessories and beauty. "I love FILA's Disruptor II Premium Lace Up Leather Dad Sneakers ($75) paired with a cropped vinyl skinny pant and a chunky sweater in a bright color."
Fall Florals: "Florals for fall are beautiful and bold, especially when showcased in a flirty dress like this Katija Floral Dress ($343)," says model and actress Charlotte McKinney.
Statement Earrings: "My Uncommon James Black Swan Earrings ($74) will make anyone do a double take," says designer Kristin Cavallari.
Plaid: "I'm a sucker for oversized and menswear-inspired jackets, like this Zara Double Breasted Plaid Coat ($119)," says dancer and actress Peta Murgatroyd. "Such a huge statement piece for women."
Colorful Tights: "Bare legs are not in season," says actress Cara Santana. "Instead, stock up on bold colors and lots of prints for extra oomph to up your fall look. From Tom Ford to Alexander Wang — everyone is adding hosiery to their new collections and we should add it to our closets too, in the form of these Accent Your Ensemble Tights ($15) that come in a slew of different shades."
Flowy Dresses: "Whether I'm picking a fall piece or a spring and summer piece, I make sure I'm wearing something sustainably made, with people and the planet in mind," says designer Christy Dawn. "This fall, I'm excited to wear our Dawn Dress ($208) layered with the Lost Explorer Armadillo Jacket ($158) — it's a men's line, but I just size down."
Western Style: "I love Western anything!" says stylist and blogger Betty Gulko. "It allows me to get back to my roots (being that I’m from Memphis and all) and put together right, it can be so rocker babe gone chic. Add a cowboy boot to a silk dress — hello! — and a Woody Western Buckle Belt ($30) to a tee shirt — you’re instantly cool!"
Sports Bras: "I'm really looking forward to seeing my favorite futuristic sporty looks reincorporated into fall trends, like this PE Nation Speedway Crop Bra ($110)," says model Joy Corrigan. "I'm also inspired by the brands that are making a difference by creating eco-friendly pieces [like] the Stella McCartney Sneakelyse Stars Platform Sneakers ($750).
Camelhair Coats: "I have my eye on a couple of oversized coats from Max Mara a la Meghan Markle," says Tinsley Mortimer, star of Real Housewives of New York City. "This camel Max Mara Manuela Icon Coat ($2,950) is a classic staple and the perfect addition to any outfit."
Shoulder Bags: "I'm seriously coveting the Wandler Hortensia Medium Leather Shoulder Bag ($995)," says Caroline Vazzana, stylist and author of Making It in Manhattan: The Beginner's Guide to Surviving & Thriving in the World of Fashion. "It's the ideal size for running around the city — to and from shows at NYFW and for traveling around on my book tour! Plus, red is really a neutral so it goes with just about every (and any) look."
Leopard Print Coats: "I'm obsessed with our leopard Kylie Hoodie Coat ($795) for fall," says Ali Valenti, brand marketing and communications director at Alice + Olivia. "Any opportunity to rock a leopard statement piece, I'm in, and the detachable hoodie is such a cool update for this coat."
Classic Booties: "Every year during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale I always end up purchasing a cute bootie for fall, like this BP. Barris Block Heel Bootie ($90)," says Emily Jackson, founder of Ivory Lane and creator of #GRLPWR Running Guide. "I love them because they are so versatile and can be dressed up with a dress or skirt, or down with your favorite skinny jeans and a sweater. Booties are a must-have for the season!"
Nudes: "I love anything nude," says Christine Andrew, founder of Hello Fashion and Shop Hello Fashion. "It goes with everything and is also a really elegant look when you wear it head to toe. You can catch me in Vince's Cashmere Ombré Stripe Mock Neck Sweater ($395) and Darling Flat ($295) in nude this fall."
Vinyl and PVC: "Who doesn’t love a '90s fashion throwback?" says Maxine Silva, editorial director at Infinity Creative Agency. "It’s minimal-meets-maximum and with this clear-blocking Tony Bianco Kiki Heel ($131), you get the barely-there style."
Oversized Outerwear: "I’m excited to work the oversized outerwear trend that I've been seeing for fall in something like this Elizabeth and James Russell Classic Coat ($795)," says model Sif Saga. "I try to veer away from too much black, so this pastel color keeps it still very fresh for me."
Thermal Tops: "Thermals are cozy and cute and amazing for the new fall season like this Wrap Long-Sleeve Top in Mushroom ($29)," says Kristin Koldenhoven, co-owner of Sophie and Trey.
