Fat-Shaming Playboy Model Dani Mathers Faces Charges
Way back in July, there was some major outrage when Playboy model Dani Mathers took to Snapchat to body shame a woman changing at the gym where both women were working out. At the time, the model apologized, but many felt that this wasn’t enough. While we live in a society that has more and more body positive media coming up, seeing someone in the public eye openly mocking another because of their body was really upsetting.
At the time, Dani wasn’t arrested or charged because police didn’t know the woman she’d mocked. Now, however, the tables are turning. The LAPD announced that they’ve finally found the woman that Mathers was mocking in her post and the woman, a 70-year-old, wants Mathers to face charges.
The pending charges aren’t all that Dani’s faced. She was suspended from work, banned from the gym and basically became a social pariah. At the time of the incident, she was frantic to make amends, claiming she wasn’t the kind of person to body shame and apologized specifically to her Playboy colleagues, but it seems not to have helped.
We’re glad that Mathers will probably be expected in court regarding her act — a misdemeanor, BTW — and hope it serves as a reminder that making fun of people’s bodies, especially taking nude photos against another person’s consent, is possibly one of the worst things you can do to another.
We’re sure she won’t get jail time, but hopefully the assault on her life and career combined with the embarrassment of charges will steer others clear from being so rude.
