The 5 Basic Braids Everyone Should Know
Not all of us are gifted at the art of hair braiding. More often than not, it can feel like achieving the perfect braid is easier said than done — even though some of us are guilty of spending our free time tirelessly practicing how to hack a rope braid or boxer braids. It’s time to get back to the braid basics by becoming a *pro* at braids that are the foundation of more intricate, next-level styles you can eventually master. You’ll have unlocked the door to endless braid possibilities in no time!
Even if you think you know nothing, you still know how to do a traditional braid from your time at Girl Scout camp. Memory unlocked! The easiest of all braids, all you need to do for a traditional braid is start with three separate strands, crossing each one on the outside over the middle strand, repeating the motion until you've got a neat plait!
French braids are giving Belle from Beauty & The Beast all the way. To achieve them, you'll start off like you're ready to do a traditional braid, except you'll incrementally add hair to each outside strand until you've worked your way down the head (or section) you're working with. We suggest practicing on a friend before you braid your own locks!
Dutch braids are a *tad* more involved than traditional ones, and are just a step up from French braids. In this case, think of the braiding motion in reverse, tucking the strands under instead of over. Online tutorials will help you totally rock these Dutch braids.
For fishtail braids, you work with just two strands to create the look, instead of the traditional three. Take one small strand from the outside of one of the two sides, then cross it over to the opposite side. Repeat the motion, alternating sides for a cohesive fishtail braid. You also don't have to practice with all of your hair – start small!
Waterfall braids look *iconic* for weddings or fancy dinners. You'll essentially make a small French braid at the crown of your head and work sideways. Instead of holding onto all three strands, you'll drop one down (hence the waterfall name) and pick another up. Gorg!
