3 5-Minute Buns That Aren’t Boring
Long-haired ladies — and gentleman rockin’ major man bun game — listen up! Buns are not going anywhere EVER, which means we need to keep it fresh. The good news is that there are endless variations on the classic ‘do to upgrade your otherwise typical twisted nub (yes, I said “nub”). In this case, we skipped the office-ready low bun style and opted for a more casual, playful vibe. Here are three buns you can totally rock all summer long and — even better — they are all styles you can pull off in five minutes flat!
The Twisted Pony Bun
This bun strikes the perfect balance between polished and unkempt with the ends just peeking up over your bun. It’s bound to become a lazy-girl favorite — you can twist up this style with almost zero effort.
Flip your head upside down to get all of your hair to the very top of your head. Smooth down any bumps with a fine-tooth comb. Twist your hair until it starts to naturally twist back over onto itself.
Step 1: High Pony + Twist It
Wrap the twisted hair around the base of your ponytail to create a bun. Only leave the ends out so they create a sort of tousled unfinished look, and then pin in place with bobby pins.
Step 2: Almost Make a Bun
Use your fingers to gently pull the base of your hair out a little to loosen up the entire vibe.
Step 3: Loosen Up
Perfect for those “WHAT time is it?” mornings.
The Fan Bun
Go big or go home with this badass bun that dresses up your outfit instantly.
Put your hair up into a high ponytail, but don’t worry about smoothing any bumps out. The messier the better. On that last twist of your elastic, only pull the hair in your ponytail halfway through (or a little less if you have really long hair). This is going to give you the fan-like shape on the top of your head.
Step 1: High Pony + Fan
Take the hairs that you left out, wrap them around the base of your bun and pin them in place with bobby pins.
Step 2: Wrap Ends + Pin
Pin each side of the fan to the base of your hair to help keep the bun from flopping around.
Step 3: Pin Down the Fan
Great for a day at the beach or a date at the movies. We love a hairstyle that can go from bikini to LBD like that.
We came up with the name of this bun based on the technique, which consists of folding your ponytail hair over and over. The result is as cute as a paper swan.
The Origami Bun
Put your hair wayyyy up, then use a fine-tooth comb to backcomb all of the hair in your ponytail. Pro tip: It’s easier to backcomb smaller sections of hair.
Step 1: High Pony + Tease
Loosely twist the base of the ponytail, fold it over toward the back of your head and pin in place with bobby pins.
Step 2: Loosely Twist + Pin
Continue to loosely twist your ponytail, fold it back over around your head and pin in place with bobby pins. Take that last bit of hair and loop it up and over to create sort of a pretzel effect and pin in place.
Step 3: Repeat Two More Times
You know all those annoying baby hairs? Well this is a moment when you can totally embrace those bad boys! Pull them out and let them frame your face to give this look a soft, playful vibe.
Step 4: Get Wispy
Too cute! We’d pair this with our brunch best any Sunday.
Now, if you jumped on the lob bandwagon like I did, then this may be more of a Pin it now and execute later type of situation. But worry not! These hairstyles are classic enough to wear any season. Otherwise, get to it!
