Why These Silicone Food Huggers Are a Best-Selling Kitchen Item on Amazon
Welcome to our new food series called Eat It Up, where we share the kitchen gadgets and foods that we can’t cook without.
Offsetting food waste may be one of the easiest ways to save money, but it can seem hard to do when cut avocados turn brown so dang quickly or you forget about that half lemon, which has now petrified in the back of your fridge. Thankfully, there’s a slew of eco-friendly products available on Amazon aimed to help us extend the life of our food. We’re currently loving Farberware Food Huggers ($10 for four). These reusable silicone food savers double as lids for cups and jars and hug cut fruit and veggies to prevent oxidation.
We’ve found these little do-dads stretch best over citrus fruits, onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers, but as we mentioned, they can also double as a lid to keep containers holding liquids, nuts, beans, spices, and more airtight. Though it’s convenient to reach for plastic wrap, bags, or foil to preserve food, these colorful, dishwasher-safe discs help cut down on disposable materials and hopefully keep unnecessary trash from entering landfills.
The Food Huggers have garnered 4.1 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with 60 percent of reviewers giving them a perfect score. Amazon shopper Quirkyosity shared this in a review, “These are brilliant at keeping onions, apples, or other round, cut fruits and veggies fresh.” But what about compared to plastic baggies or plastic wrap? Another shopper KBA312 vouches for the Food Huggers. “Did a side by side comparison: Half an avocado in saran wrap next to half an avocado in a hugger. Did the same for half a tomato. These food huggers did a better job! No browning and very minimal wrinkling. Made a delicious salad after my little experiment too!” she said. Another shopper, Crystal chimed in, “Love these little guys. Not much to say other than they work, and I like them better than Tupperware or ziplocks. One reviewer complained about residual onion smell after using it on onion half. I did not have that problem.”
