The True Serving Size of an Avocado May Shock You
If you love avocado everything (guacamole, toast, smoothies — all of it), there’s something you should know: The true serving size of an avocado is *not* the whole thing. In fact, it’s not even close to the whole thing. According to the California Avocado Commission, as of July 26, 2016 the serving size of a medium avocado is 1/3 of it. Sure, that might sound like a sliver, but 1/3 is actually larger than the previously recognized serving size set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of 1/5.

Regardless of the FDA’s teeny portion recommendation, avocados don’t deserve to be completely eliminated from your diet. They’re still a super nutritious monounsaturated fat packed with all kinds of vitamins and minerals your body will appreciate. Cutting back slightly isn’t a terrible idea, but then again, what will you do with the rest of the precious fruit? Let it die browning death?
Here’s a suggestion: Rather than let your uneaten avo go to waste, try incorporating the creamy food into your beauty routine by whipping up a DIY hair mask or brightening face mask. This way, you can wear the rest of it while you *eat* the appropriate portion. If all else fails, go ahead and eat the whole avocado, girl! YOLO.
