Chocolate Ghee Exists, and It’s Basically Paleo Nutella
We need no more proof that ghee is blowing up than the fact that chocolate ghee is now a thing. That’s thanks to Fourth & Heart, a California-based company that sells grass-fed ghee butter and ghee oil. It now has a new line that features — you guessed it — chocolate ghee. Think of it as wholesome Nutella.
Chocti ($13), which comes from the Sanskrit word for change and empowerment, is made from date syrup for sustained energy, cacao sweetened with coconut sugar, and the brand’s Madagascar Vanilla Bean Ghee, which is produced from grass-fed butter and organic vanilla beans. Cacao, dates, and ghee — who would’ve thought that’d be such a dreamy combination?
The Chocti label currently has three flavors. Original boasts a classic cocoa flavor that has a slight bitterness to it and is just sweet enough. Then there’s Coffee Guarana which, courtesy of the addition of coffee oil, has a deeply rich mocha quality. The most surprising flavor is Passionfruit, which has the subtle tang of tropical fruit and a chewier, stretchier, almost caramel-like texture.
Spreading Chocti on toast is the obvious go-to (or in my case, eating it straight out of the jar). But the spreads are also great inside crepes, as a dip for fruit, or drizzled like hot fudge on ice cream shakes. People on Instagram have gotten really creative and used the spreadable stuff to ice cookies and cupcakes, bake brownies, make hot chocolate or chocolate milk, and even add sweetness to mole sauces. Because the Coffee Guarana flavor contains 5 1/2 milligrams of caffeine per tablespoon, devotees swear it gives them a pre-workout boost. I like to give a spoonful of it a whizz in my blender along with some hot coffee for an unexpected spin on the Bulletproof coffee trend.
