Getting Hair like a French Girl Is SO Easy Thanks to This Hack
We all love rocking effortless volume, but mastering the technique can sometimes be daunting… until now! As an expert hair artist working with the most discriminating clientele, I’ve mastered how to add volume with minimal product and minimal teasing damage, allowing styles to never fall short. Taking a nod from the modern French girl, here are my easy step-by-step tricks to creating the perfect bouffant (or “le lift”) to easily take your entire look to ooh-la-la-worthy heights!
The best part about this Parisian-approved hair hack? Once you DIY your tousled bouffant, it’s easy to style whether you want to leave your hair down or pull it up into a flirty pony. Scroll through to learn how to get both looks perfect for messy second-day hair.
STEP 1: PART HAIR TO ONE SIDE
Flip your hair to one side without using a comb. The messier, the better, and anyway, things are about to get fancy (a thin cat-eye doesn’t hurt either ;)
STEP 2: TEASE, TWIST + PIN AT THE CROWN
Grab half of your bangs + all of the hair on the top center of your head and tease at the crown using a rat tail comb. Twist that teased hair to create a kind of roll, then pin it in place with bobby pins. This simple action automatically creates volume and lift.
STEP 3: REPEAT ON EACH SIDE
To get that just-rolled-out-of-bed look, grab the rest of your bangs, maybe letting a few slip through your fingers, and a section of hair along the right side of your head from your bangs down to your eyebrow. Tease it with the rat tail comb like you did the first section of hair.
Twist the hair, then pin that into place with bobby pins over the first section of pinned hair to give the back a more natural cascading look.
Do the same with the opposite section of hair, teasing, twisting and then pinning into place over the last section.
And voilà! You have a pretty messy twisting bouffant.
STEP 4: CURL YOUR BANGS
This step is in here for girls with long bangs, layers or no layers like our model Lee. Grab a 1-inch curling iron and loosely curl the pieces of hair that naturally fall and frame your face, just to polish off the look a bit. Then, take your rat tail comb and tease the roots of your bangs to add that final voluminous punch.
Ooh la la indeed! Wear as is, or follow these next steps to whip it up into a flirty ponytail.
STEP 5: PULL INTO A HAIR-WRAPPED PONY
Grab all of the hair in the back of your head into a mid-height ponytail and loosely secure with an elastic, leaving out one strand to use to wrap the elastic and camouflage it. Use bobby pins to secure the wrapped hair underneath.
We’re enamoured with the effortlessness of this hairdo, whether you wear it up or down. All in all, it’s a total bombshell look.
