These Before-and-Afters Prove That Paint Is Always the Best Home Makeover Tool
As much as we love floor-to-ceiling room makeovers, we’re willing to admit: it’s not always a budget-friendly endeavor. But if there’s one thing that can completely transform the look and feel of a room and help you nail the decor trend you’re dying to try without breaking the bank, it’s paint. (Just look at how this stunning jewel tone can changed this tiny space, or peep the bright-yet-minimalist look of these all-white bedrooms.) Case in point? These four bloggers who participated in FrogTape’s Paintover Challenge. Each blogger or couple picked a space in their homes desperately in need of a pick-me-up and then documented what they did using painter’s tape, paint, and some seriously unique designs. Check out the results below for some major weekend DIY inspo.
B&B-Inspired Bedroom Makeover
Brooke from All Things Thrifty took a uniquely old-school approach to her project, bringing retro B&B vibes to her guest room. Her first step was to add white-painted faux-brick to infuse the space with subtle texture and give her “B&B” that authentic feel.
The vintage-inspired hotel logo was the crux of her design, and painter’s tape was key to creating the outline, which she then filled in with a custom logo. (She used a projector to guide her — so smart!)
Each blogger was given a trend to help guide their process, and Brooke’s was “Made With Love.” And this hand-painted sign definitely brings that theme home!
A Moody-but-Cozy Reading Nook
The husband-and-wife duo behind Chris Loves Julia transformed an under-utilized, oddly shaped nook into a cozy reading hideaway. And this space totally goes against the traditional wisdom that dark colors make small spaces feel smaller.
Their decision to keep the natural wood accents stops the reading nook from feeling flat, and the contrast between light and dark brings an elevated finish to this corner. Chris and Julia’s trend was “Simple to the Max.” And while the space doesn’t have room for much, it’s certainly not lacking in the drama department.
A Stylish Entertainment Zone
DIY queen Ursula of Home Made by Carmona‘s theme was “Faux Natural.” She decided to tackle this long wall of cabinets, trimming it out and painting it to create a *faux* built-in entertainment center that’s the star of this space.
Her natural accents, like plants and woven accessories, totally pop against the rich, dark hue, while brass light fixtures glam it up.
Not content to just paint the walls, Ursula went above and beyond, using painter’s tape to create coordinating “dipped” accessories by taping off baskets, vases, and more. (Look closely and you can spot one or two lining her shelves.)
A Natural, Rustic Bedroom
Kim, Scott, and their two furry little helpers from Yellow Brick Home started with a white box of a room in their 130-year-old home, but they knew they wanted to end having made a colorful change.
Their theme was “Oasis,” so they decided to go bold with nature-inspired green walls and black-trimmed windows (a true one-two punch for moody hues). Their vintage home has plenty of eight-panel windows, so taping off each one to prepare for painting was certainly a time commitment, but it totally paid off. Simple white textiles and brass accents complete the look.
