Make The Ultimate Giant Cake Topper In 3 Easy Steps

Hey there! Irene, Creative Content Producer, here. One very important thing to know about me is that I’ve never met a cake I don’t like. To honor my favorite dessert, I always like to dress up my cakes with pretty decorations. An excellent cake decorating hack that would work for any store-bought or homemade cake is simply sticking a cute cake topper into it. Although we’re obsessed with anything mini at B+C, we also love going the other end of the spectrum and making ginormous things! Today, we’re showing you how to use our new Design A Banner Kit to make a statement cake topper for your next party.

FYI — our full DIY Kit Collection is available at nearly all Target stores and on Target.com! Pick up a DIY kit — like theDesign A Banner Kit featured here — ASAP, before they sell out!

Cute huh? Let’s get crafting!

First up, you’ll need the Design a Banner Kit. The kit includes two felt banners, two sets of felt alphabet sticky back pieces, two wooden dowels, and some sticky back felt emojis.

Additional Materials:

While you can definitely make a fly banner from the Felt Banner Kit, we decided to bling ours out with some embroidery, pom poms, and tassel ribbons. We got our embroidery materials from the Embroider A Wall Hanging Kit ($20).

Assembling Your Banners

Design your banners by spelling out your favorite word or phrase. I decided to declare my love of cake with mine.

If you want to add a fun trim to your banners, hot glue tassel or pom pom ribbon to the back edges of the banner.

To add texture and pops of color, do some simple embroidery around your felt letters. I wanted to reference cake sprinkles on mine. If you want to bring your embroidery skills to the next level, take our Embroidered Typography Class!

Stick the wooden dowels through the white part of the banners. Aaand you’re done! If you want to get crazier, try gluing gemstones or painting on your banners!

Stick the dowels into the cake. Ordinary cake turned AMAZING!

“I heart cake!”

“YAASS!”

Let us eat cake!
