Sweater Vests Are the Unexpected Grandma-Approved Trend That’s About to Blow Up
ICYMI: During Milan Fashion Week, Grandma officially achieved fashion icon status. The whole granny chic thing has been trending for a while now, with oversized cardigans, pleated midi skirts and all-pearl everything shedding their dowdy dispositions to become bonafide It-girl essentials. The latest piece to join their ranks? The sweater vest.
How could a historically uncool topper earn the right to call itself a spring 2017 style staple? Make an appearance on the Prada catwalk, of course. Styled with psychedelic florals (the likes of which you’d expect to see on popular ’70s TV personalities), prim-and-proper midi skirts in high-octane hues, buttoned-up shirts and sporty platform sandals, the otherwise awkward outer layer was oddly appealing.
The look became even more eye-catching when cinched with a statement belt to create an hourglass silhouette. And while Miuccia Prada opted for a more-is-more approach to the granny chic style, layering striped and plaid vests over bold graphic prints, it could totally be adjusted to suit the tastes of the modern minimalist with solids and a palette of refined neutral hues.
While it takes a certain amount of sartorial spunk to pull off a look with this much WTF factor (though we could totally see Chiara Ferragni or Camille Charrière rockin’ it), there’s something fashionable femmes from every category can take away: Clever styling can go a long way.
