Two Comfort Foods in One: Introducing the Grilled Cheese French Toast Recipe!
Is your sweet tooth aching a little bit from all the holiday cookies? After munching happily on Christmas treats and sweets all month long, we’re ready to bring on the savory goodness. First up, conquer breakfast. Today, we’re skipping the sugary sweeteners and substituting it with yup, you guessed it… CHEESE. The delightful dish combines french toast with grilled cheese to create a hearty, delicious breakfast. Introducing our Grilled Cheese French Toast!
Ingredients:
– 6 slices of thick bread (we used pumpernickel)
– 1/4 lb fontina cheese, sliced
– 3/4 cup milk
– 3 eggs
– 1 1/2 tsp dried rosemary
– pat of butter
– salt + pepper to taste
Start off by mixing the eggs, milk and rosemary together in a shallow bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Slice the bread hamburger style up to 3/4ths of the way, but don’t cut it completely in half. Leave a bit to keep the bread connected. Stuff the ‘inside’ with sliced cheese. Then, soak the bread in the milk mixture for about 1-2 minutes on each side. If your bread is thicker, soak it for 2 minutes each side, if your bread is thinner or starting to get soggy, then soak for less time.
Heat your pan on medium heat and butter the pan. Cook your soaked bread for 5 minutes on each side. Make sure the heat is low enough so it doesn’t burn, but the cheese melts for extra yumminess.
