Spooky Sweets: Eyeball and Mummy Cake Balls
We told you on Monday to watch out for Spooky, Scary, and Scrumptious Halloween Treats. And yesterday we delved into the savory with our Pumpkin Fondue. Now it’s time for our first set of spooky sweets! Easy to make and delicious eyeball and mummy cake balls are sure to be the hit of your Halloween party.
Ingredients:
– 1 box white cake mix (baked according to package directions)
– 1 tub vanilla frosting
– 1 package Wilton candy melts
– 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
– Wilton candy gel food coloring – black and red
– 3 plastic sandwich bags
– 1 small package M&Ms
Bake cake according to package directions; let cool for about an hour, or until ever so slightly warm to the touch. Note: We’ve found that making cake balls works best when the cake is still a little warm, but not so warm that it melts your frosting.
Transfer cake to a large bowl. Using a spatula, stir cake until evenly crumbled. Add approximately 1 cup frosting to the cake and mix until completely incorporated.
The texture is right when you’re able to take a spoonful of the mixture and roll it into a ball that doesn’t fall apart. If your mixture is too crumbly, add more frosting 1/4 cup at a time. If your mixture is too wet, place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes intervals until hardened enough to form cake balls.
Heat 1/2 package of candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds; stir and repeat until completely melted. Add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and mix thoroughly. Place cake ball in candy melts and gently cover with coating. Set aside on a baking sheet to cool. Repeat with remaining cake balls.
For our first design, we’ll make the eyeballs. Heat 1/8 package of candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds; stir and repeat until completely melted. Add red candy gel coloring until desired color is reached. Place red coating in a sandwich bag and cut off the very end of a corner. Use bag to pipe veins onto half of the cake balls. Place an M&M in the center of each eyeball cake ball.
Next up, mummies! Heat 1/8 package of candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds; stir and repeat until completely melted. Add black candy gel coloring until desired color is reached. Place black coating in a sandwich bag and cut off the very end of a corner. Pipe centers of eyeballs onto each M&M and two eyeballs onto each mummy cake ball.
Heat 1/4 package of candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds; stir and repeat until completely melted. Add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and mix thoroughly. Place coating in a sandwich bag and cut off the end of a corner. Use bag to pipe bandages onto mummy cake balls, being careful not to completely cover the eyes.
Let your spooky cake balls dry on wax paper or a baking sheet so that the candy melts full harden. Then serve!
