Muggles, Rejoice: A Pokémon GO-Style “Harry Potter” Game Is Coming in 2018
Insanity ensued last July when Pokémon GO was unleashed on the world, with more than 750 million downloads of the game in its first year alone. Buzz soon followed that a Harry Potter version could be in the works, and now, it’s finally becoming a reality, with a launch date set for 2018 — eee!
The augmented reality game, which combines real-world places with digital information through a tech device such as a smartphone camera, was rumored for release as early as this year, but speculation was quickly debunked to the obvious disappointment of Muggles everywhere.
Niantic Labs, the company behind Pokémon GO, is now redeeming the dashed hopes of wizard-lovers’ everywhere with “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite” in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s newly created Portkey Games division.
While we don’t have all of the info about the game just yet, we know it will be based on the popular JK Rowling series and may require players to join together in order to battle devious fantastical creatures and/or those who dabble in the dark arts.
Between the public’s initial response to Pokémon GO and the insatiable fandom for the wizarding franchise (even 20 years after its release!), we’re willing to bet we’ll soon have a LOT of gamers on our hands.
