Dare we say it — even tastier than the OG chocolate spread.

This 3-Ingredient Chocolate-Tahini Spread Knocks Nutella Out of the Water

This 3-Ingredient Chocolate-Tahini Spread Knocks Nutella Out of the Water

Welcome to our new food series called Eat It Up, where we’re sharing the products — edible, kitchen tools, cookbooks, and more — that we can’t stop talking about.

We both love Nutella and are a bit skeeved out by its controversial ingredient list (TL;DR: palm oil may cause cancer), so we’re always on the lookout for cleaner alternatives that still taste great. If you’re the DIY type, you can blitz up a batch of your own vegan Nutella, but if you’re not feeling that, we suggest picking up a jar of our latest sweet fix: Soom Foods Chocolate Sweet Tahini Halva Spread ($20 for two).

Vegan, nut-free, and made with a mere three ingredients (tahini, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar), it’s a product we both feel better about consuming and actually prefer the flavor of. Yes, this bittersweet chocolate nut seed spread takes a bit of a detour from Nutella in terms of its base. It contains half the sugar as the standard Nutella and is made of a sesame-seed-based tahini instead of hazelnuts, but we like the mildly bitter edge that this lends the spread. It keeps things from veering off into too-sweet territory — Nutella’s fatal flaw, IMHO.

If you’re ready for a more grown-up chocolate spread, we highly recommend trying it for yourself. It’s tasty when spread on toast, crepes, banana slices (basically, anywhere where you might use Nutella), and — let’s be real — straight off a spoon. While we’ve got your attention, we’d like to note that Soom’s classic tahini is truly excellent as well. Use it in everything from hummus to chocolate bliss balls. We love it so much that we start to mildly panic when our supply runs low. The two are sold in a mixed pack ($18), if you’d like to try both.

Great article, Nicole. I just started making this on my own and wanted to see if anyone had recommendations for its improvement--its crazy delicious and your article does it total justice with your description of the unique profile of this surprising and delightful combination. Cheers to a new year full of tahini exploration and fun!
