Sick of Sugary Lattes? Try These 3 Healthier Alternatives
Though it’s been a couple of weeks since the world collectively went nuts over Unicorn Frappuccinos, people haven’t exactly lost their hankering for super-sweet coffee. What can we say? People love their ‘bucks! In case you haven’t heard, there’s a TON of sugar in Starbucks’ best-selling drinks. But if you’re sick of super-sweet unicorn everything, take comfort in the fact that there are plenty of NON-unicorn, healthy alternatives out there. Here are a few of our favorite alternatives.
Golden Milk Lattes
Golden milk — non-dairy milk mixed with anti-inflammatory turmeric — is one of the healthiest drinks around. Golden milk lattes tend to vary in terms of the spices and flavors used in them, but some common ingredients include honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. And, of course, spicy turmeric. Try the one at Baba Cool in Brooklyn.
Beet-Chata
Horchata is a drink consisting of nut milk and sugar, and it’s SUPER yummy. But you can get just as much sweetness from beets, which naturally contain sugar along with fiber and other nutrients. This beet-chata is loaded with beet juice and espresso, and it’s even topped with charcoal, which is said to be a detoxifier. Get it at Chillhouse.
Oat Milk Flat Whites
Flat whites are essentially shots of espresso mixed with whole milk. That’s pretty wholesome in and of itself, but you can also make the drink dairy-free by using oat milk in place of dairy milk. Flat whites have been popular in other parts of the world for decades, but they’re just now starting to make an appearance in the US — and we’re not sad about it. Try the Oat Milk Flat White from East One if you’ve got a hankering for a flat white, vegan style.
