Prepare to Sob: The ‘I Am Heath Ledger’ Trailer Is Here
In 2008, the world mourned the loss of a brilliant young talent. At the age of 28, Heath Ledger, star of Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Night Returns, died tragically from a fatal drug overdose. Almost a decade later, the new documentary I Am Heath Ledger will revisit the actor’s brief, but impactful life.
The just-released trailer provides a first look at the film, and from what we’ve seen you’ll need tissues to watch it. Much of the footage was shot by Heath Ledger himself and reveals his passion for working behind the camera. (He’d directed videos for Modest Mouse, Ben Harper and others.)
“He was always a director,” Heath’s childhood friend Trevor Dicarlo states in the trailer. “Acting was just a way to get there.”
The filmmakers also capture family members, close friends, and Hollywood associates reflecting on Ledger’s work and legacy. “Even as a supporting actor he will steal the whole show,” Brokeback Moutain director Ang Lee recalls. “That’s the power of Heath Ledger.”
The movie is set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, with a limited release in theaters on May 3. The network Spike will air the doc on May 17.
