Thanksgiving often marks the start of the holiday season, which means, in addition to dish after dish of delicious food, we can expect to snap a selfie or two with family and friends. Making sure you look picture-perfect throughout the festivities can be difficult if your lip color feathers or disappears as soon as you dig in. To help your pout stay painted to perfection, we had a number of makeup artists weigh in on the best long-lasting lipstick formulas that won’t budge. Scroll on to see their picks.
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick ($14): For many busy beauty buffs, this liquid lipstick has already become an everyday staple. No matter what the holiday season throws at you, the formula will ensure it stays put from prep to cleanup.
COVERGIRL Outlast All-Day Lipcolor with Topcoat ($8): This lip duo has been around for years, and there’s a good reason why it's endured — it really works! The formula is built to last up to 24 hours but doesn't just offer a matte finish. “You get best of both worlds: Glossy and long wear for under $10,” Merli Estime, a NYC-based makeup artist, says.
Chanel Le Rouge Duo Tenue Ultra Wear Lip Colour ($37): NYC-based celebrity makeup artist Min Min Ma loves this dynamic duo from Chanel but has a word of caution. “This lipstick will not move once you put it on, so work fast with the application,” Ma, who has worked with Meghan Markle, Hailee Steinfeld, and Troian Bellisario, says. “One to two layers is enough.” To remove, Ma recommends using a cleansing oil.
Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick ($10): Putting it in ink typically means making things permanent, and this Maybelline must-have is almost on par with the idiom. It delivers high-impact pigment that lasts up to 16 hours of wear, ensuring your pout will look flawless no matter how late the party goes on.
Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Color ($28): “The colors in the range are beautiful and well pigmented,” says Ma. “One tube will last you for months.”
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick ($20):Makeup artist Paige Pelfrey, whose work you might've seen on the likes of Paris Hilton, Chrissy Teigen, and Chloe x Halle (to name a few), loves this beauty buy for its comfortable matte finish that doesn’t feel heavy. “I can apply it in the morning and not touch up for hours,” she says. “Even after eating and/or drinking. Not to mention, this entire product line is vegan (which I love).” While Pelfrey prefers the holiday-appropriate hue Outlaw, if you're looking for a fun alternative Estime adores the shade Roxy, a vibrant grape.
Bobbi Brown Luxe Matte Lipstick ($37): “These just-launched gems are the most hydrating, long-lasting lipsticks I’ve ever found,” affirms Ingeborg, a NYC-based celebrity makeup artist who works with mega models like Salem Mitchell, Hailey Baldwin, and Bambi Northwood. And she’s not the only one — fellow makeup artist Lilly Keys, who counts Kali Uchis, Charli XCX, and Dua Lipa as clients, adores it as well because they “have that luxury feel that lasts without drying, and I love the neutral flattering shades in their line," she says.
Fenty Stunna Lip Paint ($24): In lieu of sticking to the classic holiday hue of Fenty’s first Lip Paint, Estime suggests showing off one of her latest lip colors, Unveil. She considers the shade to be “‘90s bae [with a] comfortable non-drying formula” that's sure to sleigh all day.
MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour ($21): Deep and bold lip looks are synonymous with the holiday season, and this liquid lip color turns the saturation up to 100. The trick to a precise application: “Start applying the lipstick from the center of the mouth first, then work outwards,” Ma says. Next, use a lip pencil or a brush to ensure the edges are sharp and clean.
NARS Semi-Matte Lipstick ($28): “When you want a real pop of vibrant color, I always turn to NARS as one of the staple lipsticks in my kit,” says Keys, pointing to the brand’s classic Jungle Red color that’s not only an amazing option for the holidays but all year round.
Sigma Beauty Liquid Lipstick ($15): Sigma might be best known for its array of affordable and effective brushes and cleaning mats, but celebrity makeup artist Jared Lipscomb says you shouldn’t overlook the rest of its cosmetics. He loves the brand’s liquid lipstick, pointing to the shade Venom as the most beautiful hue for the season's soirees. “This deep, cool toned red is [ideal] for holiday parties, and the smooth, long-lasting matte finish ensures it won’t budge while you snack and sip your way through all the [festivities],” he says.
Becca Cosmetics x Chrissy Teigen Glow Gloss ($22): Becca’s recent collaboration with Chrissy Teigen isn’t technically a lipstick, but Lipscomb says it still falls under the long-lasting category since it delivers a “very pigmented pop of color that lasts longer than your average gloss.”
Jane Iredale Lip Liner ($15): Lip liners are usually used to keep our other colors from feathering throughout the day, so why not streamline the look and put the pencil in the spotlight? Aside from the rich tone that fits well with the winter festivities, Lipscomb praises it for its creamy and pigmented formula that can withstand a full holiday meal stretching from apps to dessert.
Milani Amore Matte Lip Crème ($8): With a finish that’s neither crusty or sticky, this lush lippie strikes a balance for our bold lip needs. And with a sumptuous shade like Sugar (pictured here), we suspect there will be visions of sweet plums dancing in your head.
