We’re all after glowing, healthy skin. But if you live with eczema (and 31.6 million people in the United States do), staying breakout-free might seem almost impossible to achieve. In honor of Eczema Awareness Month in October, we sought out the best holistic remedies, including diet and lifestyle tips that can have a big impact on your skin. Scroll down to learn more.
1.Find harmony. “An important part of treating eczema is to calm the candida in your gut,” Ben Johnson, MD, founder of Osmosis Skincare, says. What does that have to do with your skin, you ask? Most medications for eczema work by squashing inflammation at the skin level. Unfortunately, they also suppress immune function, which can really mess with your gut, and cause eczema breakouts to linger longer. Ugh! Johnson recommends balancing things back out with a product like his Osmosis Skincare’s Skin Perfection Harmonized Water ($40). It will help soothe inflammation in your stomach and help you treat skin irritation and eczema from the inside out.
2.Consider your diet. Johnson advises it’s also important to reduce the amount of sugar, hormones, and dairy you’re eating. “They trigger inflammation and can make eczema so much worse,” he warns. Instead, fill your plate with organic vegetables, fruits, fatty fish like salmon, and foods containing probiotics.
3.Go natural. To soothe your skin, apply topical barrier creams and natural anti-inflammatories like calendula, chamomile, and even emu oil. “Try Pai Comfrey and Calendula Calming Body Cream ($40) and Azure Naturals Ultimate Emu Oil ($17) and you’ll be on the way to calm skin,” Johnson says.
