Watch George Clooney Reminisce About the Night He Met Amal
George Clooney used to be very private about his personal life, but he’s opened up a little since meeting and marrying Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin). Back in September, he revealed how they found out they were unexpectedly expecting twins. And now, in a chat for David Letterman’s new Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, he’s reminiscing about how he met his wife.
After admitting that he started “twitching” when he first heard the story, Letterman said that he had been told that Clooney didn’t even have to leave his house to meet his love. In fact, she came right to him. After a little laugh, the 56-year-old actor admitted, “It’s the wildest thing!”
He then told the story of their meet-cute, saying, “A mutual friend of ours said, ‘I’m stopping by and can I bring my friend?’ And I was like, ‘Of course.'” But then something interesting happened. Clooney continued: “Then I got a call from my agent who called me and said, ‘I met this woman who’s coming to your house who you’re going to marry.'” (Sounds like this agent certainly knows his client.)
And while that’s reason enough to smile over the story, there’s actually more to it than that. Amal didn’t just meet her future husband that night — she also met her future in-laws. “My mom and dad were visiting, so my parents were there,” Clooney explained.
The Money Monster star said he and Amal “stayed up all night talking.” Despite what sounds like an instant connection, though, he had to admit that he still wasn’t totally confident about where he stood with the human rights attorney. He told Letterman that they exchanged emails, but he didn’t know if she wanted to go out with him. (“Who would, George?” Letterman quipped.)
It’s hard to imagine George Clooney having any doubts when it comes to romance, but he obviously worked up enough nerve to ask Amal on a date. And the rest, of course, is happily-ever-after history.
