This Is How to Properly Clean All Your Glittery Fashion Buys
As we bid the holidays adieu and roll into a brand new year, we’re focusing on not just honing our own personal style, but also how to best care for the staple pieces that we really can’t live without. And if you love sequins BIG TIME, as we do, then you’re probably wondering what the best way to both clean and store your glittery (and often delicate) clothing might be. We spoke to the fashion experts over at Alice and Olivia to find out how to keep your sparkles the absolute shiniest, year after year.
According to style czars over at Alice and Olivia, a brand known for its love of embellishment, it’s best to clean your sparkle-tastic items as little as possible. If you have a small spill just be sure to take a spot-clean approach. When you know it’s time for an actual full clean then it’s *always* wiser to bring the garment to the dry cleaner instead of machine washing it at home. This will ensure that your glitter garb maintains its integrity (i.e. shape and texture) and lasts through many a party. Although they don’t have a “sparkle-specific” soap recommendation, anything very gentle works for simple spot treatment.
If you’re more of a seasonal sparkle-sporter then it’s good to know how to stash away your shimmery shoes and clothes until next year’s holiday shindigs. Ideally, always use a clear plastic bag so it won’t snag any particularly delicate pieces. Bonus if the bag is airtight so as to avoid household hazards like mold and mites. What happens if you lose a sequin? Don’t panic and definitely don’t retire your garment. According to the brand, any trusted tailor should be able to replace missing sparkles with a similar (if not exactly the same) type of embellishment.
