How to Make and Rock the Fanciest Pair of Socks Ever
Post holiday blues got you like :( ? Come January, when we’ve returned from traveling, have attended all the holiday parties, had all the festive cocktails, danced to all the greatest songs of the year and given and received all the fancy gifts, it can feel like there’s a lack of things on the calendar. Don’t despair! Fill your time with a DIY that you’ll want to wear out on the town to keep the party going. (That’s two evenings filled!)
January is the time for fresh perspectives and to reinvent or revamp your style for 2017. Put a little pep in your step with something a little different like these super glam DIY socks. Pair this fancy footwear with heels, loafers or your fave flats for a look that’s chic AND lets you keep a little bit of NYE style in your wardrobe.
Materials and Tools:
- black fabric
- flexible interfacing fabric
- elastic trim (we used gold)
- sewing needle
- thread (gold or your color of choice)
- scissors
- precision fabric cement
- tweezers
- gold beads
- sheet of cardstock
- 4 colors of sequins (we used gold, pewter, pale pink and pale blue)
- pair of sheer socks
- iron
Instructions:
- Make a pattern and cut the pieces out of cardstock. We used one large, abstract shape (think butterfly wing) and three small teardrop shapes.
- Cut a section of black fabric. You won’t need much material — about 1.5 x 1.5 feet will be great!
- Cut the flexible interfacing fabric the same size as the black fabric.
- Follow the instructions on the interfacing packaging and fuse the interfacing to the black fabric with a warm iron.
- Fold the fabric in half and cut your patterns out so you get two mirror-image pieces in each shape.
- Take your precision fabric cement and create a base design and pattern with your multi-color sequins. We used gold, pewter, blue and pink! You may want to use tweezers for the sequins for more precise placement.
- Once the fabric cement is dry, add more dimension to the appliques by stitching more sequins on top of your base design for a layered look. We used gold thread to match our gold sequins :)
- Add gold beads around the edges for some variety. Then, voilá — your appliques are finished.
- Let all the fabric cement dry before applying the appliques to the stockings. Place parchment paper inside the socks to keep them from sticking together on the inside.
- Use fabric glue (or a hot glue gun on a LOW heat setting) to apply the appliques to your stockings. Press firmly.
- Add some optional elastic trim to the top for some additional flare and you are ready!
