Just like different blush or eyeshadow shades look good on different skin tones, there are different methods of overlining your lips that will most flatter your face. If you've seen this trend on social media but have never actually tried it before, never fear! We are here to give you a rundown of the products you need, as well as beauty hacks that will give you full lips — without making you look cartoonish.
Overlined lips will give your mouth more definition by adding a faux shadow around your lips (similar to the way that contour adds a faux shadow underneath your cheeks), and they can also balance out uneven lips and intensify or round out your cupid's bow depending on the look you're going for.
What Are Overlined Lips?
This is one trend that's exactly what is sounds like. You use a few different makeup products — most importantly, lip liner — to outline your lips in a way that make them look fuller and more plump.
What Do You Need To Overline Your Lips?
For overlined lips, you'll need lip liner, lipstick, and lip gloss. Keep reading for some color inspiration.
Overlined Lip Inspiration
There are a couple of different colors you can go with when overlining your lips. Usually, you want a lip liner that's darker than your lipstick so that it gives the illusion of a shadow. But the kind of look you want will determine how much darker your lip liner is than your other products.
If you prefer a more natural look, pick a lip liner that's just a little bit darker than your lipstick, or you can even pick one that's the same color. That way, the overlining is more subtle and blends into the rest of your makeup easier.
For a medium overlined lip, use a liner that's complementary to your lipstick but a few shades darker. You'll want to keep the same tone so you don't mix cooler and warmer tones in the same area and distract from the rest of your look. Keep the edges more defined like Millie Bobby Brown does here, or use your finger to blend them out before applying your lip gloss.
For the most defined overlined lips, pair your lip liner with a light lipstick and gloss. If you ensure that your lip liner is just a little bit darker than your foundation, and the lipstick complements your lips, it won't look as crazy as you might think. After lining, color your lip in lightly to give it an ombre look, then blend with your fingers so that the finished product won't look as harsh.

If you have 3D lips (which is where the edges of your lips naturally pucker out instead of sitting flat on your face), then you can use a combo of overlining and underlining to get a look that is most flattering. Try it a few different ways so you can figure out what you like the best.

When you overline lips, you can do more than just outline the edges. For a quick extra step, add some of the product into your lips' natural creases. It'll give them some extra definition, without spending a ton of extra time or needing extra products.

In addition to providing some dimension, overlining your lips is also a great way to balance out your lips if they're uneven. Just go over the side that needs some extra TLC a few more times than the other side, top with lip gloss, and you're set.
