This Is the RIGHT Way to Apply a Face Serum
Lately it seems like every beauty brand is coming out with a new facial oil or serum. This explosion in fancy and fun products got us wondering why these new beauty essentials are garnering so much hype. We turned to beauty mogul April Gargiulo, the creator of the best-selling Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum ($185) to get the scoop. Scroll on to discover why this tiny product is a must-have for glossy mag editors, bloggers and celeb makeup artists alike.
April first created her serum several years back, after she discovered that many of her fave beauty products contained ingredients that she couldn’t use during her pregnancy. Influenced by her winemaking background, April wanted to create a formula that would naturally beautify all skin types. She revealed to us, “We created Vintner’s Daughter with a specific woman in mind — me! I have struggled with my skin forever and wanted to have one super-active, multi-correctional product that helped with hormonal, acne-prone skin, discoloration, wrinkles, elasticity and general radiance and health. I also wanted it to be non-toxic. It sounds like an unicorn product, but trust me, it’s the real deal. Someone recently called it ‘an Instagram filter for your face.'” Seriously, that sounds like the ultimate beauty product to us!
Why do you need to use a serum?
For those new to serums, we know adding one more product to your beauty routine might seem like a drag, but April tells us they’re important because, “they are (usually) highly active formulations that penetrate the dermal layers more deeply than traditional moisturizers.” No matter what your skin type, April promises that there’s a face oil for everyone.
How much serum should you use?
April shared that there’s no hard-and-fast rule for how much oil to use, saying, “This is something that entirely depends on the person and the brand.” Since Vintner’s Daughter is very concentrated and active, she suggests applying six to eight drops using the “push/press technique” at night, after cleansing and toning. After one week, she says you can can add serum to your daytime skincare regime.
How should you apply a serum?
We talked to April about her “push/press” application technique, which she developed in tandem with her serum. She said to consider this “a type of facial massage that is very easy to master and maintain.” According to April, the benefits of this technique are incredible, as it “creates a pump-like action that brings oxygenated blood to the surface of the skin, creating a healthy, gorgeous glow.” As if that wasn’t enough, April tells us this simple motion “aids in lymphatic drainage and reduces inflammation” and “allows product to sink into skin faster and with increased penetration.” All it takes is a simple 30 seconds per day to establish a ritual that creates a feeling of wellbeing and balance. We’re definitely up for the challenge!
