Jimmy Kimmel Is Still Haunted by Last Year’s Best Picture Mix-Up in a New Oscars Promo
On Tuesday morning, the 2018 Oscar nominations were announced, revealing the hopefuls (some of them even historic!) for awards season’s biggest night. The show is set to take place on Sunday, March 4, and in a new promo for the telecast, returning host Jimmy Kimmel is clearly having a tough time getting over last year’s infamous Best Picture flub.
The clip opens with the late-night host on what looks like a therapist’s couch, admitting that he still dreams about #EnvelopeGate — when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway got the wrong envelope and announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner instead of Moonlight — every night. He stares at piles of unopened mail (“because of… you know, all the envelopes”), threatens a barista who gets his name wrong, and is even followed by a giant, imaginary Oscars statue.
Kimmel says he doesn’t know how to handle his nerves, and asks for advice on what to do. The camera then cuts away to reveal he’s not in a therapist’s office at all — he’s in Beatty’s house. “I don’t care what you do!” the actor exclaims. “Just get out of my house!”
This isn’t the first time the Oscars have poked fun at last year’s massive mix-up. In an earlier promo for the show, the flub was front and center, flaunting a moment that was, if nothing else, truly unforgettable.
This year’s Best Picture nominees include Call Me by Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, The Shape of Water, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The Oscars take place on Sunday, March 4, at 8pm ET/5pm PT on ABC, and yes — Kimmel will be hosting. Check out the hilarious new promo below!
