John Krasinski Couldn’t Stop Crying Watching Emily Blunt in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are very vocal fans of each other’s work, and it looks like Mary Poppins Returns will extend the love-fest. Krasinski was so moved by Blunt’s upcoming film that he sobbed uncontrollably through almost the whole thing.
“The first time I saw it, they give you a tissue box in the screening room, and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s very nice. I don’t have a cold,'” Krasinski said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, November 28. “And they started screening the movie and 25 minutes into the movie, I stood up and went to the back of the room. Emily said, ‘Do you not like it? I’ve never seen this happen.'”
It turns out, the former Office star didn’t just like it — he loved it, and was overcome with emotion. “I was crying so much I blew through the tissue box in 20 minutes,” he continued. “[I] had to go to the napkins, and then when I ran out of napkins it was all sweater. Just a lot of [wiping tears], ‘Oh, it’s so beautiful!'”
The film, a sequel of sorts to the 1964 Disney classic, follows Mary Poppins’ arrival to take care of the Banks children (and their children) following a family tragedy. Like the original, the film — which also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, and Emily Mortimer — is a mixture of live-action and animation, and early trailers have promised no shortage of musical magic.
“It’s honestly one of the most beautiful films,” Krasinski told DeGeneres. “I think it’s exactly what everybody needs at the holidays. It’s pure joy.”
Mary Poppins Returns will be in theaters on Wednesday, December 19.
