Kaia Gerber’s New Cool-Girl Shag Will Make You Want to Call Your Stylist STAT

Kaia Gerber has officially surpassed her title as an “up-and-comer” and moved into trendsetter status. The Marc Jacobs spokesmodel and daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, 15, just got the cool-girl shag haircut you’ll be dreaming about all summer long.

Celeb hairstylist Jen Atkin — the mastermind behind such well-known manes of Khloé Kardashian, Jessica Alba, and Sofia Vergara — posted a shot of Gerber’s new look over on Instagram. “Fresh cut straight out the salon @kaiagerber,” Atkin wrote, adding, “#ModernShag.”
According to Atkin, the modern shag is the perfect in-between long and short hair style for a very good reason. “One of the best things about growing your hair out is when you can start to cut layers into it to get more movement,” she tells Brit + Co.
Compared to her old hairstyle, you can see Gerber’s new look isn’t a drastic makeover but includes just enough layers (and a bit of a bang) to give her some edge.
If you’re thinking about copping her modern shag (AKA the swag), which has been gaining momentum for some time now, have no fear. Because of the abundance of layers, your stylist can cater the cut to flatter your face so you don’t wind up looking like Florence Henderson from The Brady Bunch. In fact, Atkin has a pro-tip to keep the style from getting too retro. “Put OUAI Matte Pomade into the ends to keep that French girl vibe,” she says.
But it’s not a one-size-fits-all kind of cut. You definitely want to work with your stylist depending on your texture. “If you have fine hair, make sure your stylist knows how to correctly take out weight so you don’t get too stringy. It’s best for medium hair because most girls get more wave out of their hair,” Atkin tells us. “I recommend OUAI Wave Spray to help get that wash-and-go look. Thick hair needs to make sure they razor cut or use thinning shears to remove enough weight to see the cut.”
