You can find more from her neverending inner monologue on her Twitter or Instagram accounts.
In a full circle moment from her time as Penny Lane in 2000’s Almost Famous, movie star Kate Hudson just released her first album! No longer a groupie, Hudson’s debut studio album Gloriouscame out on May 17, 2024. The album boasts 12 original songs, and it's an emotional mix of lyrics chronicling her time as a parent, as a woman, and as someone in the spotlight.
Glorious is definitely worth checking out, but in between album listens, you can’t go wrong with watching (or rewatching!) any of Kate Hudson’s fabulous films. There’s a wealth of them to choose from, depending on your mood. And who knows — with a newfound singing career under her belt, Kate may just be coming for that EGOT status yet! So without further ado, here are the best Kate Hudson movies to watch right now!
Almost Famous
A wise woman once said, “It’s all happening.” Little did Kate Hudson know when she spoke these words as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, she’d be talking about herself a quarter-of-a-century later!
We’d be remiss to mention her new music journey without bringing up the film that landed Hudson her first Oscar nom. Almost Famous follows a high school journalist following a band on tour for Rolling Stone magazine. Hudson stars as Penny Lane, one of the band’s groupies. Hudson was only 19 when she starred in the cult classic, solidifying her role in the Hollywood zeitgeist forevermore with witty one-liners and sage wisdom.
How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
If you’ve been on TikTok any time in the past year, you’d know there's huge a How To Lose A Guy In 10 Daysresurgence at the moment — partially for young Matthew McConaughey, and partially for that amazing yellow dress Kate Hudson wears. But where’s the love for Andie Anderson, Hudson’s character with the unusually alliterative name?
She’s whip smart. She knows what she wants, and she’s not afraid to go for it. She doesn’t mind using men to her advantage, because she prioritizes women (and her job) above love… at least, she thinks she does. This is a particularly fun film, and unique to other rom-coms, because both the male and female love interests have tough exteriors that we get to watch with glee as they are unexpectedly broken down by the other.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Hudson's always been an actress known for her impeccable comedic timing, and her role in Glass Onion highlights this top notch talent. In the satirical sequel to the first Knives Out, Hudson stars as Birdie Jay, a former supermodel who often gets in hot water online for speaking her mind… a little too freely. Her character in this murder-mystery is like a train wreck you just can’t tear your eyes from in the most delicious way.
Bride Wars
Often forgotten for other wedding-centric rom-coms like Bridesmaids, Bride Wars (2009, dir. Gary Winick) pits Kate Hudson’s Liv versus Anne Hathaway’s Emma. While Hudson’s character isn’t necessarily the underdog here, she’s still so fun to watch (even when she’s being a little evil). When both women are proposed to on the same day, they turn against each other in the race for who will get married first, desperate for the same venue. But when only one of you gets to have the picture-perfect wedding at the Plaza Hotel, can you really blame them?
Mother’s Day
In stark contrast to the other films on this list, this one’s a bit of a tear-jerker. More of a romantic drama with hints of comedy (instead of a proper rom-com), Mother’s Day (2016, dir. Garry Marshall) really allows Kate Hudson’s acting chops to shine through. Mother’s Day is a great retrospective on the complicated relationships we share with our families, and how sometimes, family doesn’t always mean the people we’re blood-related to.
Kung Fu Panda 3
This one’s really switching up the vibes, as one of Kate Hudson’s only animated features. In the third installment of the beloved films, Hudson voices Mei Mei, a potential love interest for Jack Black’s character, Po. It’s a fun, easy-going movie, and it’s perfect for those with young children (or even those just seeking to reconnect with their inner child!).
Deepwater Horizon
Anyone who said actors with good comedic timing can’t successfully also be dramatic actors has clearly never seen Kate Hudson at work. Deepwater Horizon (2016, dir. Peter Berg) strikes a quite serious tone, as it’s biographical in nature and depicts the events of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig spill from 2010. Hudson plays Felicia Williams, the wife of Mark Walhberg’s Mike, and is as high-stakes as you can get.
Something Borrowed
Aaaand we’re back to the romantic comedies! Hudson stars as Darcy, a young woman who’s recently engaged to the love of her life (or so she thinks…) When her fiancé ends up cheating on Darcy with her best friend, Rachel (at the birthday party Darcy threw for her, no less!), awkwardness ensues as the wedding plans move forward, all without Darcy’s knowledge of the affair.
