Leonardo DiCaprio Might Be Making One of Your Fave ’90s Cartoons into a Movie
With our fave Oscar winner, Leonardo DiCaprio, still holding the hearts of most gals who grew up in the ‘90s along with having a well-known love (and downright concern) for the environment, it totally makes sense that he has his eyes set on a cartoon from the past that is all about saving our world. That’s right — Leo is looking to turn Captain Planet into a new movie.
In a show you could catch from the early to mid ‘90s, Captain Planet and the Planeteers featured the voices of David Coburn, LeVar Burton and Whoopi Goldberg, among others. Along with the planet-loving superhero, five young people from around the world were empowered with magic rings to help fight evil polluters. Apparently, Leo and writing partner Jono Matt are in talks to pen the screenplay for Paramount, and we could not be more excited.
The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the story will not be a remake, but will instead take place years after we last saw the Captain and his Planeteers in action. With the superhero now a “washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him,” it definitely sounds like an interesting take on the beloved cartoon.
But with Leo behind the helm (and possibly appearing in the movie? *fingers crossed*), we’re totally on board. “Go planet!”
