This New Spring Lip Trend Requires Zero Makeup Skills

This New Spring Lip Trend Requires Zero Makeup Skills

This spring is truly shaping up to be the season of lazy girl beauty. Not only are zero-effort hairstyles with a wash-and-go look to them currently considered the ultimate way to wear your strands, but now the latest lip trend is also taking the less-is-more approach to the next level. It’s too easy to resist, even for your favorite celebs.

The trendspotters at Byrdie are calling it “a stripped-down, subtler, more natural-looking version of the classic nude lip.” But really, it’s much simpler than that sounds: just your natural lip color enhanced by a swipe of gloss or balm. And better yet, a lip look that actually requires no makeup skills: no lining, filling or undertone matching required.

Obviously, wearing lip balm is nothing new — applying the nourishing salve to our kisser is a beauty essential, and one we’ve been doing since we were old enough to carry Lip Smackers in a puppy-shaped purse. But what’s cool about it trending now — see Taylor Swift’s iHeartRadio lips and Mary Kate + Ashley Olsen’s pouts, like, forever — is that it’s breaking the convention that a done-up look is the standard (even for formal events, so consider this your budget-friendly way to wow at all the weddings you have to attend this spring). And, much like the no-makeup makeup trend before it, it’s placing a greater emphasis on skin care and embracing your own unique features, which we can totally get behind. So, since you already know how to get the on-in-seconds lip look, we thought we’d share four of our favorite balms we always keep on hand. Scroll through to see our next-level nude lip essentials.

EVERYDAY BALM

Glossier Balm Dotcom ($12): I literally just put this hydrating potion on my lips. I love it as an any-day, any-time remedy because it’s dense enough to feel like it’s really getting the job done and leaves a really pretty, long-lasting shine. Don’t just keep it all for your pout: since it’s scent-free, you won’t have any reservations rubbing this stuff onto other rough patches on your bod. Multi-tasker FTW.

DESK-SIDE BALM

Rosebud Perfume Co. Rosebud Salve ($6): This might have been the first non-Dr. Pepper balm I ever bought, and it has stayed at my desk from grade school through now. It’s a cult fave for a reason: it’s compact, soothing and has the most swoon-worthy understated shine (+ smell that takes me wayyy back to doodling in my Chandler).

DATE NIGHT BALM

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask ($26): One word: luxury. Formulated with rich organic agave nectar and jojoba oil, this stuff is seriously like slippers for your lips. Besides using it every night before bed, this is my go-to balm for giving my lips an instant velvety texture and a super sexy shine. You can also pick it up in two flirty tints too: a deep red wine and a light pink champagne, both of which are on my want list for spring.

HEAVY DUTY BALM

Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment ($25): Another cult favorite, this heavy-duty yet super lightweight lip repair primps and plumps your lips in one breezy, moisturizing swipe. It leave pillow-soft results, and the silky shine (and sugary sweet scent, natch) is to die for.
