Often we just need a squeeze of lemon, a teaspoon of grated orange zest, a sprinkle of nutmeg, or a pod of cardamom, but that means we’re inevitably left with a lot of fruit or spices that end up unused. Save the waste and introduce fresh, pure flavors and nutrients into your cooking with essential oils. Since these oils are highly concentrated and last for months on end, it only takes one or two drops to infuse your food with a burst of flavor.
If you’re completely new to essential oils in your kitchen, here are three easy recipes to try. Just make sure that you read your labels and purchase brands that are approved for internal use like Young Living, doTERRA, and NHR Organic Oils, all of which test for purity.
Peppermint Hot Chocolate
Make yourself a cozy mug of hot chocolate and add one or two drops of peppermint essential oil. You’ll love the refreshing scent of mint drifting above the satiny chocolate. (Photo via ollinka / Getty)
Honey Lavender Yogurt

Lemon Chicken
Lemon juice can be replaced with a few drops of lemon oil. Try this Chinese lemon chicken sauce and substitute the three tablespoons of lemon juice for four drops of lemon essential oil. You’ll be shocked how much brighter your sauce tastes. (Photo via Geel, Hans / Getty)
