L’Oréal Paris Names Silver as the 2019 Hair Color of the Year
Once upon a time gray hair was something to cover up, but on Monday, February 4, L’Oréal Paris, in partnership with Vogue, revealed that silver strands are the 2019 hair color of the year. The brand’s color designers decided on the metallic shade after researching hair color trends, search data, and inspiration from the runway, social media feeds, and street style stars.
“Not only has silver hair been a top color trend on the runways and it is the ‘it’ color for women of all ages, we love what the color stands for — it symbolizes charisma, ethereal energy, power, focus, and it is beyond chic,” notes Orrea Light, vice president of L’Oréal global marketing product development and beauty innovation, in a press release. To celebrate 2019’s hair color, the beauty company also announced its Hair Color of the Year collection, which includes Féria Smokey Silver ($9), Superior Preference Soft Silver Blond ($9), and Colorista Hair Makeup in Silver Blue ($7). If L’Oréal’s proclamation finally gives you reason to embrace your silver side, find your most flattering shade by first looking to your skin tone. “When choosing the right silver tone for your skin tone, it’s a very small margin of silver you can play with,” says L’Oréal Paris celebrity hairstylist and colorist Jonathan Colombini. “To widen your options always keep a darker natural root. This will give the illusion of having such a fashion tone, but the root showing will complement your skin tone. I would keep clients with olive to tan skin tones in a more gun metal silver tone and pale to yellow skin tones in a titanium silver tone.”
