Lucy Hale Is Being Called Out for Body-Shaming Herself
Lucy Hale has plenty of experience defending herself from others, whether it’s because of her controversial Bantu knots or her leaked topless photos. But this time around, Hale may have to apologize to fans for body-shaming herself.
As celebs came out in force to celebrate their favorite dads for Father’s Day this past weekend, Lucy Hale posted a pic of herself and her pop to Instagram with the sweet message, “You taught me to have soul. I love you daddy.” Aw!
Unfortunately, the 28-year-old Pretty Little Liars actress decided to add a further comment saying, “ugh I was so fat.”
Fans took issue with her remark for a number of reasons. First, the fact that she used “ugh” with “fat” indicates that she sees being larger as a negative thing. Secondly, she’s definitely not fat in this picture, and juxtaposing the comment with an objectively thin body type creates unrealistic expectations.
Her followers were quick to call her out, with han.nah67 summing up the issue and pointing out the potential problem with Hale’s comment by saying, “I know you’ve got the right to say that, but just imagine what it’s like for your fans who are a little bit bigger or struggling with their body to hear that from their idol who’s obviously never been fat.”
Perhaps Hale might want to address her fans’ concerns while also checking out a few helpful body-positive books this summer.
