Luke from Gilmore Girls Reveals How the Actors Avoid Screwing Up Their Super Fast Dialogue
There are so many things to love about the Gilmore Girls (including the fact that it’s coming back!), and one of the best things has to be the incredibly witty banter between the beloved characters. Anyone who’s a fan of the Stars Hollow crew knows that when they get chatting, things can start moving a mile-a-minute. But how do they do it? How can the actors tackle such complicated lines at such a fast pace? Luke, played by Scott Peterson, reveals his trick for doing just that.
Luke served a LOT of coffee to Lorelai and Rory throughout the years, which may be one of the reasons the characters are always talking faster than the speed of light. While not everyone could keep up with the pace, Scott managed, revealing, “The acting challenge is to not get caught up in their rhythm, yet not deter from the pace of the scene.”
He continued, “That was the tricky part… I’d do it by picking up my cues… because they had this much dialogue [motions a big chunk with his hands], and then I would have that much dialogue [motions a small chunk]. It’s just the rat-a-tat-tat, no gaps, no pausing, no nothing. They end a sentence here, and you start talking there before they end it.”
And what would Scott, or rather Luke, usually be stepping in with? “More coffee?” Of course!
