You Have to See the Pictures from Lupita Nyong’o’s Homecoming Kenya Trip
Lupita Nyong’o, hair + fashion inspo queen, soon-to-be Star Wars goddess, major DIYer and all-around beauty icon, has been keeping a low profile ever since awards season, but as the summer has kicked into high gear, the actress is upping her presence on Instagram. Like other famous ladies Katy Perry + Reese Witherspoon, the Kenyan native is also enjoying a vacation on international soil this summer. Currently visiting Kenya + its capital city, Nairobi, (you know, the one that inspired her unforgettable 2014 Oscar gown), Lupita’s journey entails a little more than just some R+R. She’s doing some major humanitarian work alongside typical vacay activities (and there are baby elephants involved).
The Oscar winner, who was born in Mexico City and raised in Kenya, has dubbed this trip her official homecoming back to the African country. While taking in the sights, heading out on safaris and — more than likely — indulging in delicious meals, she’s also in Kenya for a purpose. As a global ambassador for WildAid, an organization that raises awareness for the plight of elephants, Lupita is drawing attention to the fact that elephants are losing their lives to poaching and are in danger of extinction. While that is a huge and meaningful reason to be visiting the country, the actress is also in Kenya to promote women’s issues as well as acting and the arts, too. Basically Lupita’s vacation is very busy.
While busy spreading the word and promoting an ivory-free world, Lupita did have time to take an #elphie. Who wouldn’t?! She captioned the elephant close up, “Elephant tusks start showing when they are around 2 years old. Let THEM wear the ivory.” PREACH, girl <3
Unshockingly, in all the Instagram snaps she’s uploaded of her trip so far, she is looking flawless in chic, safari-ready + street style outfits, including a standout pink embroidered top she rocked when visiting her grandmother’s home, which is painted in Nairobi blue (sound familiar?). Looks + smarts on an impactful trip? Lupita, you win the summer.
