The color that Pantone crowned this year’s official hue, Marsala, is making major waves in the makeup department. Not only does the wine-inspired color translate into a luxe looking pigment, but it pulls of two of the trickiest beauty moves of all: it’s universally flattering and extremely versatile. That makes it an ideal go-to for lips, cheeks and eyes on every skin tone. Oh and it’s a beaut hair color too. Seriously. See why we’re in love?
With one of the biggest date nights of the year approaching, we thought we’d showcase Marsala in a dramatic evening look that will flatter everyone. We’re going with bold eyes and bolder lip on this sultry date night look that you can DIY in just seven steps.
Step 1: Prep
Apply your moisturizer, foundation and concealer so your base face is on and ready to go.
Start by highlighting your brow bones and inside corners of your eyes with a slightly shimmering cream color like Autumn Blonde from the to-die-for (and now out of stock) Sephora + Pantone Universe Facets of Marsala Multi-Finish Eye Palette ($39).
Step 2: Highlight + Contour + Accent
Diving into the first hue of Marsala, you want to contour your entire crease with the coppery Chutney from Sephora + Pantone Universe Facets of Marsala Multi-Finish Eye Palette ($39). Deepen the smokey eye by accenting the outer crease with the deep terra cotta Marsala Matte from Sephora + Pantone Universe Facets of Marsala Multi-Finish Eye Palette ($39).
Add a pop of shimmer with the metallic Desert Mist from the Sephora + Pantone Universe Facets of Marsala Multi-Finish Eye Palette ($39) to the center of your eyelids and slightly into the inside corners of your eyes. This will add greater dimension to your smokey eye and because of its nude-gold color, will brighten your eyes.
Step 3: Pop of Color
Use a black eyeliner on both the inside of your upper lash line as well as the inside of your lower lash line. Also add a little liner onto your lower lash line — we’re bringing the drama.
Step 4: Eyeliner + Set With Shadow

($11). Then use a highlighter like Benefit Cosmetics High Beam ($38) above your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose and the center of your upper lip.
Step 5: Contour + Highlight
Line your lips entirely with a magenta hue like Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Lip Pencil in Wine ($22). Slightly fill in your lips with this liner to add dimension and keep your lipstick in place — a necessary step when you’re applying such a dark hue. Though, no promises that it will stay on when you’re makin’ out with your boo ;)
Step 6: Lip Liner
Velvet Matte Lip Pencil by Nars in Train Bleu
so luxe. Apply directly over your lined lips and blend using a lip brush.
Step 7: Lipstick
Sultry, slightly vampy and without-a-doubt sexy. It’s a knock-’em-dead look that will take your date night vibe to seriously romantic levels. Plus, much like these wine-tinged hues will compliment any skin tone, they’ll also go with almost every color in your wardrobe, so no need to feel restricted to your LBD. Anything goes with a color as cool as Marsala.
