9 Maternity Couples Costumes for You, Your Bump, and Your Boo

Westworld Man in Black + The Maze: For the man in black, wear black pants, a black suit jacket, and vest with a gray piece of fabric to tie around your neck. Add a black cowboy hat and toy gun in a holster. For the maze, grab a few yards of cream muslin, fold in half lengthwise and cut a hole for your head. Pin, glue or stitch the sides together, leaving cutouts for your arms. To add the maze map, you can either print it out on iron-on transfer paper or freehand it with a fabric marker.

’80s Andre Agassi + Tennis Ball: This idea was pitched to me by my hubby — I mean, what ‘80s kid didn’t want to be Agassi at some point? To create his signature look, use pink and black fabric paint to create the '80s detailing on a white polo sport shirt. Then layer pink running Spandex under gray running shorts to get the full throwback style. Finish off the look with a mullet wig, tennis racket, and old school sneakers. For the tennis ball, cut a hole the size of your belly in a black dress. Add white felt tennis ball detailing on a neon yellow tube skirt and wear that underneath the black dress. Finish with a neon yellow wig.

OG Dirty Dancing Baby (With a Watermelon) + Johnny Castle: I mean, I basically carried a watermelon. A throwback and a pun in one, it’s pretty easy to put this costume together. For baby, start with a pale pink dress (or top and skirt). Then take dark green felt and cut it into a watermelon shape. Add wavy stripes of light green felt and attach them to the larger shape. Use fashion tape or hot glue to place onto your belly. For Johnny, it’s all about tight black pants, a white button-down, and that slick ‘do. If you’re using a wig, we recommend using hair product to make the hair a bit more styled and less choppy.

Ramen + Chopsticks: Turn that belly into a bowl of ramen! And if you’ve got a tall drink of water as your baby daddy, he’ll make a picture perfect pair of chopsticks. To create the ramen bowl, cut a white piece of felt the circle shape of your belly and hot glue onto a red dress. Use hot glue to cover the white circle with strings from a mop — these will be your noodles. Cut green scallions, corn, and hard-boiled eggs out of felt, then hot glue those on top of the noodles. Cut a half circle from white felt and glue on the bottom of the circle to create the ramen bowl. Next, you need utensils! We used the foam from a mattress topper to create the structure of the chopsticks. Use a hot glue gun to wrap the foam in brown felt. Create the chopstick bag from white and red felt and then add on black Chinese characters.

Bowling Pin + Bowling Ball: Strrrrrriiiiike! The bowling pin costume is actually more ridiculous than the bowling ball, IMO. To make the pin, fold a giant piece of white felt (or any sturdy fabric) lengthwise and cut out the shape of a bowling pin. Fold the fabric over your head and use a pencil to mark where your face goes. Cut a circle out, then use hot glue or even safety pins to attach it. We used red oilcloth to add stripes. For that glitzy ball, get yourself some shiny purple fabric and sew it into a tube that fits around your belly. Take a blank tube or tank dress and cut out a hole for your newly purpled belly to pop through. Top it with a black button down, and use a Sharpie to add finger holes onto your ball.

Easter Basket + Easter Bunny: I know there’s probably some really weird pun to be made about eggs and pregnancy and so on, but I’m going to skip right to the how-to. To turn your belly into a basket, start by getting a basket made out of rope and cut it in half to fit the size of your belly. Hot glue the basket to a white dress and add in Easter grass and plastic eggs. Finish off the outfit with a pastel pink wig. And for the bunny, wear all white and don a somewhat creepy bunny mask. Donnie Darko would obviously approve.

The Earth + The Moon: No time like pregnancy to show your baby mama that she is the world around which you revolve ;) To turn your bump into planet Earth, grab a black long-sleeve dress and cut a hole in the middle of it for your belly to pop through. Create a stretchy blue tube to pull over your belly (under the black dress) and use green felt to cut out continents and glue in place. Top it off with a bright blue wig. For the moon, we were a tiny bit inspired by Andy Warhol with this look. We cut a moon shape out of a foam mattress topper and covered it with shimmery silver fabric. Create a strap to hang it from your shoulder and you’re good to go.

Ice Cream + French Fries: I didn’t have a ton of pregnancy cravings, but my most comical one was for an ice cream cone alongside a basket of French fries. So, why not dress up as my fave snacks? We’ll start with the ice cream. Take a pair of khaki pants and use a black Sharpie to draw diagonal lines on them to create the cone. Then take a white button down shirt and use brown fabric paint to create chocolate syrup dripping down the shoulders. Add sprinkles by cutting out bright colored pieces of felt. Then add a red bow tie and cherry head band to complete the look. Now, onto those fries! Get red maternity leggings and a yellow top to act as the base of your costume. Then cut small stripes out of a foam mattress topper and spray paint them yellow to create fries. To assemble, get a box and spray paint it red. Add straps and cut a hole for your belly to pop out. Stuff the “fries” into the box; just make sure you don’t cover your belly. It’s a match made in the most delicious heaven.

Alice in Wonderland Caterpillar + Cheshire Cat: Whooooo are yoooooou? Growing up, I definitely imagined a version of my life in which I lived in my own wonderland, so I was pumped to turn the hubby into the Caterpillar and myself into the Cheshire Cat. To make the Caterpillar costume, it all starts with a blue snuggie. Add a light blue felt strip down the center to create the belly shape and draw lines across it with a black Sharpie. Cut hand shapes out of pink felt and glue ‘em on. For the cat, get yourself a pair of pink tights, a pink and purple feather boa (for the tape), feather earrings, feather lashes, and a pink hoodie dress. Use purple duct tape to add stripes to the dress and tights (be sure you’ve already put them on; duct tape does *not* stretch). Done and done.
