When Prince Harry opened up about Meghan Markle’s first Christmas with the royal family, most people thought he was being super sweet when he said that “it was fantastic” and “the family loved having her there.” But his fiancée’s half-sister doesn’t seem entirely thrilled with something else Harry said about their time together.
“I think we’ve got one of the biggest families that I know of and every family is complex as well,” the 33-year-old prince told BBC Radio 4’s Today earlier this week. “[Meghan]’s done an absolutely amazing job. She’s getting in there and it’s the family that I suppose she never had.”
The former Suits star is the daughter of Doria Loyce Ragland and Thomas Markle, who divorced when she was a young child. Samantha Grant (or Samantha Markle, as she is now known) is Thomas’ daughter from a previous marriage. After he and Ragland split in 1988, Meghan reportedly lived primarily with her mother, though she credits both of her parents with teaching her about social consciousness.
The nature of Grant’s relationship with the actress is unclear, but she appears to have taken issue with Harry’s comment about the family Meghan “never had.” In a tweet on Wednesday, she wrote, “Actually [Meghan] has a large family who were always there with her and for her. Our household was very normal and when dad and Doria divorced, we all made it so it was like she had two houses. No one was estranged, she was just too busy.”
In a follow-up tweet, she added, “Meg’s family (our family) is complete with sister, brother ,aunts, uncles, cousins, and the glue of our family, our amazing, completely self-sacrificing father. She always had this family…Marrying merely extends it.”
When one tweeter said Meghan was “estranged” from some of her relatives, Grant wrote, “She has a large family. She always did. Our dad is amazing and completely self-sacrificing. We made it so that she had two houses. How fun it was!”
Though Meghan and her half-sister seemingly see things differently when it comes to their past and familial relationships, we’ll just leave that between them and instead keep ourselves focused on her fairy-tale romance (and upcoming wedding) with Prince Harry.
