Meryl Streep Is Joining ‘Big Little Lies’ for Season 2
As if the news that Big Little Lies would return for a sequel wasn’t good enough, HBO has just announced a pretty major casting update: Meryl Streep is joining the already A-list cast for season 2.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Streep will play Mary Louise Wright, mother of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard). Perry, the abusive husband of Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman), was (spoiler alert!) killed off at the end of season 1, and Streep’s character is said to be “concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son Perry’s death [and] arrives in Monterey searching for answers.”
HBO made a second season official in December. At the time, it was announced that Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon would reprise their roles as Celeste Wright and Madeline, and that the show would once again be written by TV veteran David E. Kelley. The seven-episode sequel will get a new director, however, as Andrea Arnold (Transparent,I Love Dick) takes over for Jean-Marc Vallée.
The network also expects most of the rest of the original cast — including Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, and Adam Scott — to return as well.
Big Little Lies is fresh off a successful awards season, taking home eight Emmys and four Golden Globes in recent weeks. We may not be at the end of the good casting news, either: According to an earlier breakdown obtained by Vulture, the show is also looking to fill the roles of Celeste’s nanny and the mayor of Monterey. After the Streep news, we can’t wait to see who they bring on board!
