How to DIY Your Way to Michael Kors’s Dreamy Beach House
To say Michael Kors’s home decor is stylish is a little bit like saying coffee is good. Duh. The designer’s Long Island beach house, featured in Vogue, is light, airy and filled with treasures he and his husband have collected on their travels. With a view of the ocean, the home is a vision of vacation perfection and definitely boasts a chill vibe worth stealing. Kors told Vogue he loved the “laid-back but indulgent” look. Until we can get our own beach house, we’ll satisfy ourselves with getting the look ourselves through faux fur and rustic wood accent pieces.
The house looks out right over the beach but sheer curtains add privacy and an enormous paper lantern gives the space soft, spa-like lighting. The rest of the decor is beachy but modern with woven chairs, rustic wood accents and cozy touches like fur pillows and throw blankets.
You don’t have to live by the water to get the same airy, modern vibes. Set up a beach-inspired vignette with a woven lounge chair from Urban Outfitters ($329) and a Mongolian lamb pillow from West Elm ($69). Follow this DIY by Atilio to get a tree stump side table and toss a bouquet of flowers in a birch lane decorative teak vase from Birch Lane ($75)
Kors told Vogue that he didn’t have any color in his house because he believed “people provide the color.” The neutrals-only palette definitely works in the poolside dining area, where textured placemats and linen napkins give a casual look. Giant bouquets of camomile are inexpensive, but make a serious statement and are a perfect embodiment of Kors’s ideal aesthetic: barefoot luxury.
Even if you’re not thinking about outdoor dining just yet, you can get the look in your indoor dining room too. Add some serious texture with these braided natural placemats from Pier 1 ($20) and striped linen towels from Burkelman ($25). A DIY wood-burned cutting board from Brit + Co easily makes the transition from kitchen accessory to dining table cheese plate, and an amber glass vase from H&M ($25) is just the thing for filling with fresh flowers or an edgy bouquet of branches.
