Mindy Kaling Shows Why You Need *This* Color in Your Wardrobe Right Now
This summer, matching sets were everywhere. This fall, denim-on-denim will take over (and we’re totally pumped for it). But if you’re wondering what matchy-matchy look you can claim for the transitional weather that’s right around the corner, then Mindy Kaling has the answer (and it’s a bold one): go monochrome.
The Mindy Project star recently shared a behind-the-scenes snap from season four of the new-to-Hulu series that features her character (who’s pregnant, btw) dressed in head-to-toe orange — not soft, swoon-worthy peach or earthy, almost-neutral rust, but bright Crayola orange. Yes, wearing an exclusively primary or secondary color palette is a major fashion statement — see how Mindy dramatically pops against the sea of dull commuter blues, blacks and grays in her Insta snap — but that’s exactly the point of this trend. It’s an insanely playful departure from the way you might typically think about getting dressed, and ultimately, no matter how outside your color comfort zone, feels very sleek and polished. To get thinking about going beyond a pop of color, we’ve hand picked four Mindy-inspired ways to wear bold color-on-color right now. Scroll down and repeat after me: “orange is the new black.”
1. Topshop High Neck Culotte Jumpsuit ($50): Get the all-over color look without the fuss. Slip on a pair of open-toed mules and your brunch outfit is totally taken care of.
2. Mango Essential Sweater ($15) + T by Alexander Wang Orange Stripe Engineer Skirt ($145): To ease in on the trend, pick a pattern that features the standout hue, like the stripes in this skirt, and pair with an easygoing sweater.
3. MSGM Cropped Sweater ($113) + Choices Orange High Waisted Straight Wide Leg Palazzo Pants ($22): Combining textures in an outfit always adds more interest to it (as if you needed more of that), but in this case, it can also add a touch of elegance and intention to the look. A chunky knit and a wool trouser — regardless of color — are a match made in fashion girl heaven.
4. Mikazou Long Jacket ($165) + A Common Space Ombre Gridline Peg Leg Trousers ($38): If you can’t commit to all-color-everything for a full day, cheat by wearing a coat, kimono or cardigan in your statement hue that you can easily shed to lessen the intensity.
