'Moana 2' Features Brand New Characters And Old Favorites
We got to see a whole new world in 2016 when Moana reunited Te Fiti with her heart — lush green islands, beautiful flowers, and a wealth-obsessed crab that is honestly seared into my memory. But this fall, we’re headed even deeper into the ocean for Moana 2. Disney has already blown me away by making the animated Moana actually look older for this sequel, and I can’t wait to see all of the beautiful spots this Disney princess shows us this time around. Plus all the new music from TikTok legends Barlow and Bear (you know, the duo behind The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical!?). Here’s everything you need to know about the new Disney movie.
What is Moana 2 about?
After returning the heart of Te Fiti to the goddess, Moana journeys across Oceania to reunite her entire family. According to the official synopsis, "After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced."
The studio presented new footage and artwork at the Annecy Animation Festival on June 14. “We begin our story with Moana, three years after the first film," co-director David Derrick Jr. said (via The Hollywood Reporter). "She’s exploring the seas, searching for new islands, mapping the ocean, hoping to find other people. As the people of Motunui have not seen anyone for generations, Moana knows that the ocean connects us. But to whom? Where are they? She’s looking for proof that others are out there. She’s curious why she hasn’t found anyone.”
The crowd got a glimpse of the movie's opening song, which features Moana coming home after a new discovery, and a bolt of lightning interrupting a ceremony. Some of the artwork Disney showed off included new characters, including Moana's little sister and Moni, the “island’s most passionate storyteller” and huge Maui fan.
When is Moana 2 coming out?

Moana 2 hits theaters November 27, 2024. If you ask me, this is going to be the perfect fall movie because it'll give us one more taste of summer before we really get into the holidays (and the dreary winter days that follow).
