The Most Popular Swimsuits of the Year Are Mindy Kaling + Taylor Swift Faves
If you’re still unsure of what swimsuit to buy for your epic summer vacay, weekends away or backyard staycation, then this news might finally help you suit up. Online shopping search engine Lyst has rounded up its most searched for swimsuits for 2015, and the two most popular styles are a little surprising. While sheer everything and plunging necklines are dominating ready-to-wear right now, the biggest bathing suit trends are the opposite of itsy-bitsy. Coming out on top are the classic one piece and high-waisted bottoms. It seems like teeny-weenie bikinis have officially gone the way of the skinny jean.
According to a chart in a Fashionista report, which shed light on the swimsuit style ranking, 45 percent of all the swimwear on Lyst this summer are one-pieces. In addition to that, Fashionista said searches for one-pieces are up 56 percent on the site from last year. Remember, we’re not talking about the Speedos of yore. Today’s one-pieces, like the Mara Hoffman number Mindy Kaling showed off on Instagram, are cut through a modern lens to flatter all kinds of curves, and peppered with cutouts and patterns that can make it feel just as eye-catching as a next-to-nothing option. That doubled with the security over-all coverage affords you, and we can see why the one-piece is having a moment.
More surprising is the rise in high wasted bikinis, a search term which, according to Fashionista, is up 124 percent this year on Lyst. That comes after news that the granny panty — lingerie with the same up-to-the-belly-button, full-bottomed silhouette — is quickly become the go-to underwear of choice, beating out hipsters, briefs and thongs. Perhaps comfort is a major reason for this explosive swimsuit trend. Unlike other bikini bottoms, these all but guarantee full-coverage of your booty, which means you can concentrate on splashing in the surf instead of keeping your suit in check. Plus, the pinup style of the swimsuit bottom does wonders for elongating the torso, not to mention looks insanely cute with glamour sunnies and a bright red lip. Just ask Taylor Swift, who’s “always wearing, like, a 1950s bathing suit” + her besties the Haim sisters.
