Considering my favorite subject in school was history, I can never turn down a historical TV show. Whether it's a romance like Bridgerton, a thriller like Lady in the Lake, or a drama like Shōgun, I simply cannot stay away. Prime Video's new summer TV show feels like a mix of multiple genres into one, and it totally stands apart from everything else on streaming right now. My Lady Jane rewrites history to give Lady Jane Grey (who was beheaded in 1554, nine days after becoming Queen of England) the life she deserved. Here's everything you need to know about your newest TV obsession.

My Lady Jane is based on the 2016 book of the same name by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows (who later published books rewriting the lives of Mary Shelley, Jane Eyre, and Calamity Jane). The series reimagines the life of Lady Jane Grey, who became Queen of England in 1555 — and then was beheaded nine days later.

Why was Lady Jane put to death?

Jane Grey and her husband Lord Guildford Dudley were charged with high treason. According to the Historic Royal Palaces official site, Jane said her father-in-law "hath brought me and our stock in most miserable calamity and misery by his exceeding ambition." While Queen Mary didn't want to put Jane to death, keeping her (and Guildford) alive would have proved to be too much of a threat.
Did Lady Jane Grey love her husband?

Yes, Jane Grey loved Guildford Dudley! She described herself as "a wife who loves her husband," and also admitted her disdain for how her mother-in-law had control over him.
