Not Sure What to Get Dad for Father’s Day? We Asked Nate Berkus for His Advice
If Father’s Day has crept up on you (yup, us too) and you need to squeeze in a last-minute-yet-still-rad gift for Dad, we’ve got some pretty sweet options for ya via Nate Berkus. The interior design expert and dad to daughter Poppy Brent-Berkus created a travel-inspired collection for Target that has every rugged, golden, classic item a dad could ever want. Plus, we asked the designer about his favorite Father’s Day gifts — and, to our surprise, not everything on his list is a beautifully designed home decor item, as you might expect. Get a Berkus-approved gift for Dad and so much more below!
What Father’s Day gift did you receive from your partner last year?
Nate Berkus: Jeremiah gave me an incredible family manifesto written by researcher Brené Brown.
What should someone give to a dad who is impossible to shop for?
NB: A trip — even if it’s a day trip. As long as it’s something you can do together.
What are some unique Father’s Day gift ideas?
NB: I tend to like the idea of an experience more than a gift — a barbecue at home with family and the making of good memories means more to me than cufflinks or a tie.
Which pieces from your collection would make great Father’s Day gifts?
NB: The Sculpted Ceramic Box or the Ceramic Agave Figural with a note or trinket inside. I love how important these pieces feel, wherever they land. Or, the Cross Hatch Photo Frame with a picture of you and him when you were little is always thoughtful.
What was your approach when designing Target’s spring/summer collection?
NB: It really represents a new take on texture and the addition of a sepia brown to a palate of neutrals. It was also the culmination of trips to Peru and central Mexico mixed with what felt modern.
What would be the ultimate gift for you to receive on Father’s Day?
NB: I’ve already got it! Seriously, there’s nothing quite like being the dad to our 15-month-old daughter.
How will you and your husband be celebrating Father’s Day this year?
NB: TBD… it’s a surprise! But my family will be over at our new home in LA, around the pool with all the kids.
