Netflix Just Revealed Some Surprising Facts About Our Viewing Habits in 2017
While most of us are eagerly looking ahead to future binge-watching nights — anyone else counting down the days until season 4 of Grace and Frankie and the second part of Fuller House’s third season? — the people over at Netflix have been spending their time looking back at what we watched this past year and, TBH, they have some pretty surprising facts about our 2017 viewing habits.
According to a press release about the data, Netflix members around the world watched more than 140 MILLION hours of shows and movies per DAY (which is more than a BILLION hours per week). And we started strong right off the bat, with Sunday, January 1, being the busiest Netflix-ing day of the entire year. (Perhaps a good binge-watch is an ideal remedy for a New Year’s hangover?)
Also according to the release, someone in Antarctica decided to binge-watch Shameless this year, while another person found themselves watching Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 365 days in a row. Whoa.
Mexico was the top locale for viewers who watch Netflix every single day, and the average member watched a grand total of around 60 movies on the streaming service this year.
When it comes to shows we collectively binge-watched over the past 12 months, American Vandal took the top spot, followed by 3%, 13 Reasons Why, Anne with an E, Riverdale, Ingobernable, Travelers, The Keepers, The OA, and The Confession Tapes.
We didn’t rush through everything, though. Viewers took a little more time with The Crown, Big Mouth, Neo Yokio, and A Series of Unfortunate Events. Those were joined by GLOW, Friends from College, Ozark, Atypical, Dear White People, and Disjointed.
A few shows were just so good and so enticing that we couldn’t resist a little Netflix cheating. While many of us would never admit that we watch shows ahead of our significant others, we apparently couldn’t resist Narcos, 13 Reasons Why, Stranger Things, Orange Is the New Black, Sense8, Black Mirror, Marvel’s The Defenders, Marvel’s Iron Fist, Ozark, or MINDHUNTER.
And while Netflix cheating may have caused a few relationship issues, at least we had a few good shows to bring us back together. Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Star Trek Discovery, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Riverdale, Fuller House, Chef’s Table, Atypical, and Anne with an E were series we opted to watch as part of nights with the fam.
All in all, 2017 gave us lots of opportunities to binge-watch some of our favorite shows while sweetly savoring others. We can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for us.
