Netflix Just Announced a Sequel to ‘The Kissing Booth’
Netflix is set to continue its rom-com streak with another sequel to one of its hit original films. The streaming service revealed on Thursday, February 14 — Valentine’s Day, natch — that The Kissing Booth 2 is officially happening, with the original cast in tact.
The announcement was made in a short video featuring stars Joel Courtney (Lee) and Joey King (Elle). The clip shows the costars building — you guessed it — a kissing booth. “I think we’re missing just one thing,” Courtney says as they admire their craftsmanship. King then happily places a big number “2” at the end of “The Kissing Booth,” as she and her costar, who play lifelong best friends in the film, celebrate their work (and the sequel!) with a fist bump and adorably awkward dance moves.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! It’s official!” Courtney announced on Twitter. King shared the video on her account, too, writing, “YUP!!! WE ARE GETTING A SEQUEL!!!”
Jacob Elordi, who played Noah in the original (and dated King IRL), is also set to join the sequel, according to Netflix.
The Kissing Booth, released in May 2018, was based on the Beth Reekles novel of the same name, which was originally self-published on the social writing platform Wattpad. It was a major hit for Netflix and preceded other similarly popular titles such as To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Set It Up.
So far, there’s no release date set for the sequel, but according to Variety, filming is expected to start later this year, and the film should arrive on Netflix sometime in 2020.
