Nikki Reed and Dell Are Turning Old Laptops into Jewelry — and It’s Good
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, right? Well, Nikki Reed and Dell are banking on exactly that. Actress, animal advocate, and environmentalist Reed recently teamed up with the tech giant to create a jewelry collection for her label, BaYou With Love — made entirely out of recycled computers.
Yes, you read that right: The Circular Collection by BaYou with Love and Dell is made from gold (responsibly) extracted from old computer motherboards through Dell’s US recycling programs. And yes, the jewelry is cute AF.
The Circular Collection, which just debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is all 14 to 18-carat gold and includes delicate earrings and stackable rings, with gemstones like diamonds and opals that are sustainably sourced. There’s even a slick pair of cufflinks for the eco-conscious man in your life. Ranging in price from $78 to $168 on bayouwithlove.com (excluding the cufflinks, which hit at $348), this is the kind of understated, goes-with-everything jewelry you can wear anywhere, not to mention feel really darn good about.
According to Dell, “Around 12.5 percent of electronics are responsibly recycled globally. In phones alone, Americans throw away more than $60 million in gold and/or silver every year.” Using a practice for extracting gold that’s 99 percent more environmentally friendly than extracting from the earth — as well as more ethical, in terms of labor conditions — this zero-waste approach to accessorizing seems like a no-brainer. Socially conscious, sustainable, and stylish? Well, that’s pretty much a win-win-win.
