Nina Dobrev’s Hairstylist Dishes on the Best Way to Grow Out a Bob

Few celebrities have as much fun with their hair as Nina Dobrev. The Degrassi: The Next Generation alum shocked us all last fall when she debuted a perfect, piece-y bob, only to quickly change it up a few weeks later with the addition of blunt bangs for her role in the upcoming thriller Lucky Day. Now, according to her longtime stylist Chris McMillan, the trend-setter is ready to return to her long hair days (a process that none of us particularly enjoy) — but Dobrev is doing it with ease. Here’s how.

The Vampire Diaries star shared photos of her ’70s-inspired shag on Instagram, crediting McMillan with the fresh chop. McMillan, who famously works with Jennifer Aniston, explained to Allure that the vintage cut is the perfect antidote to get Dobrev through the awkward growing-out period, and we’re taking notes.

The celeb stylist offered that the “best way to grow out your bob entails face-framing layers and a few long layers.” He then told the magazine, “I always start with face-framing, then the long layers are created by just basically holding the hair up and cutting off the corners.”

Adding a mix of shorter and longer layers makes for a more versatile look. The hair guru gushed over his client’s tresses, adding, “[Her hair] is actually a work in progress. Instead of bobbing her to let her bangs grow out I softened her blunt bangs and softened her bob to create a new shag look.”

And it seems Dobrev is well on her way to creating the biggest hair trend of 2018, because McMillan dished, “It allows the hair to be more natural with less maintenance, and it’s fresh and modern. Also, I was just in Paris and noticed all the cool girls on the streets were wearing their hair more in this direction.” Oo la la.
