‘The Office’ Actor Hugh Dane, AKA Hank the Security Guard, Has Died at 75
Hugh Dane, the actor best known for playing Hank the security guard on The Office and, more recently, a police officer on The Mayor, has died at the age of 75.
News of Dane’s passing was first shared on Facebook by the Los Angeles Inner City Cultural Center, an arts institution that fosters young careers and multiculturalism. The Center posted details for a celebration of life for the actor, praising him as “a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.” A cause of death has not been revealed.
Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute alongside Dane’s grumpy but reliable Dunder Mifflin security guard, took to Twitter to share the news with fans of The Office. “RIP Hugh Dane, AKA Hank the security guard,” Wilson wrote. “He was one of the greats. So kind, funny, talented. We will all miss him.”
Wilson also posted a clip of an iconic season 2 scene the actors shared on the show. As Dwight is named the “Honorary Security Adviser,” he attempts to make some changes to the job, which Hank does not find amusing.
Other Office stars including Steve Carell (Michael Scott) and BJ Novak (Ryan Howard) retweeted Wilson’s tribute, with Carell adding that Dane was “a terrific guy.” And Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapoor) wrote, “Hugh Dane was one the funniest actors ever. I loved writing and acting with him.”
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
